Energy Initiatives and Directives for Business
We've put together a short list of the most relevant official initiatives and directives for businesses and other organisations.
Energy Performance Certificates
From now on, commercial buildings under construction, for sale or for rent need to have an Energy Performance Certificate (EPC). By October 2008 all buildings of all sizes will be included. To meet these requirements business owners will need accurate floor plans, details of the building structure (e.g. roof, window and wall construction), lighting and HVAC details.

Display Energy Certificates
The purpose of introducing Display Energy Certificates (DECs) is to raise public awareness of energy use and to inform visitors to public buildings (only public buildings at this stage) about the energy usage of the building. DECsDECs provide an energy rating of the building from A to G, where A is the most efficient and G is the least efficient. They are based on the actual amount of metered energy used by the building over a period of 12 months.

ISO14001
ISO14001 is the international specification for an environmental management system. It specifies requirements for establishing an environmental policy and is generic and flexible enough to apply to any organisation. Amongst the requirements is the focus on energy consumption and management. Companies considering contracting to UK public bodies such as county councils or the 2012 Olympics will need to demonstrate ISO14001 credentials.
